NEMA Enclosure Ratings Guide

Selecting the right enclosure type and material for your installation environment. NEMA ratings classify electrical enclosures by protection against water, dust, ice, corrosion, and oil per NEMA Standard 250.

Common NEMA Types for Control Panels

NEMA 1 — General purpose, indoor. Basic protection against falling dirt. For climate-controlled electrical rooms.

NEMA 3R — Rainproof, outdoor. Protects against rain, sleet, and ice. Not dust-tight. For outdoor equipment pads.

NEMA 4 — Watertight, outdoor. Protects against windblown dust, rain, splashing and hose-directed water.

NEMA 4X — Watertight + corrosion resistant. Same as NEMA 4 plus corrosion resistance. 304/316 stainless or fiberglass. For food, pharma, chemical, coastal environments.

NEMA 12 — Dust-tight, drip-tight, indoor. For manufacturing floors, warehouses with airborne dust or oil mist.

How to Select: Decision Guide

  1. Indoor or outdoor? Outdoor eliminates NEMA 1 and NEMA 12.
  2. Washdown or hose-directed water? NEMA 4 minimum.
  3. Corrosive environment? NEMA 4X.
  4. Dusty industrial, indoor? NEMA 12.
  5. Climate-controlled, clean indoor? NEMA 1.
  6. Select material based on environment.
  7. Size: lay out components + wire duct + 20% expansion.
  8. Calculate thermal load and select cooling method.
